Our fitness class programme has never been bigger or better. We can't wait for you to join us in Ravelin Sports Centre

Your fitness class membership

If you selected fitness classes as an activity option for your membership, you will now have access to a range of virtual and in-person fitness classes that will push you to your limits, help you achieve your fitness goals, all whilst having fun.

Step 1: What you need to know

The benefits of group exercise: Staying motivated to exercise regularly can be difficult for some of us. Exercising in a group can provide you with the encouragement and accountability you need to reach your exercise goals.

How to access the studios: We have three studios all fitted with the latest equipment and technology to ensure you have the best experience. You can gain access to the studios and changing area by scanning your card, sticker or wristband on the door on the right opposite the squash courts.

Decide which classes: If you are unsure of which classes would suit you and your fitness goals best, check out the full class descriptions, or ask a member of our team and they will be more than happy to provide you with all the information you need.

Step 2: What you need to do

Decide which classes: If you are unsure of which classes would suit you and your fitness goals best, check out the full class descriptions, or ask a member of our team and will be more than happy to provide you with all the information you need.

Book 7 days in advance: It’s important to note that before attending any of our fitness classes, you will need to secure your place by booking via the UOP Sport app. If there are no places available for your favourite class, keep checking the app as more spaces may become available when people cancel.

Be prepared: Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the class is due to start (even longer if there is equipment to set up). If you arrive late your instructor is unable to grant you access so please do not ask them to. Wear suitable clothing and trainers and bring plenty of water and your own towel because you are going to need it.

Cancel if you are unable to attend: This is the most important thing of all. You know what it's like when you can’t get into your favourite class. Even more frustrating when a class is fully booked and then your friend tells you that there was loads of spaces. Please cancel if you are unable to attend, you can do this quickly and easily via the UOP Sport app. Repeat offenders may have bookings restricted.

Step 3: What you need to succeed

Start Slowly: If you are new to fitness classes, don’t book too many classes – we suggest you start with two classes per week. After four to six weeks if you feel up to it you can increase this to three. Intermediate to advanced exercisers should aim to attend four to five higher-intensity classes a week.

Variety is the spice of life: Choose classes that you enjoy the most, this way you are more likely to attend regularly. Ensure you mix up the style of class too. Try to include a combination of cardio, strength, conditioning, and holistic classes, or even add in some stretching, swimming, or walking. To stay motivated and get the best results, change your routine every four to six weeks.

Have a goal: Ask yourself why you decided to attend fitness classes? Was it to make friends, lose weight, tone up, or something else? Set yourself a realistic goal and hold yourself accountable. Plan which classes you are going to attend each week and stick to it.

Rest is Important too: Try to schedule a minimum of two rest days per week. Your body needs rest to grow and even professional athletes need rest days to recover and reset.

If you have any questions about your fitness class membership, feel free to ask a member of the team when you visit us or email us at sport-fitness@port.ac.uk.
