Our People and Culture
One team, one culture, working together to inspire active lives
At UOP Sport, we’re building for the future. We’re creating a staffing structure that complements the fantastic £57 million Ravelin Sports Centre and building a team that supports and encourages our university community to succeed.
Our values are simple - we’re customer-centric, we’re developing excellence in all areas, and we’re creating opportunities, all with a focus on improving physical activity. If you share our values, share our ambitions, and have the skills to contribute to our success, we’d love to hear from you.
Our mission is powered by a dedicated team of 652 people, including 180 permanent staff, alongside casual and hourly-paid staff, and 472 volunteers.
We support our people and build a culture of teamwork into everything we do. UOP Sport is a fun place to work - you only have to speak to our team to understand that.
Our Impact
We’re proud of the positive and supportive culture we’re building at UOP Sport. Our staff satisfaction results show high levels of engagement and wellbeing, with 85% of staff reporting a positive working environment and a strong Staff Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 67, reflecting trust, motivation and a genuinely positive workplace culture.
Our workforce also reflects our commitment to developing students and graduates through meaningful employment opportunities. We actively support progression from study into work, creating clear pathways into the sport and leisure industry.
- 59% of hourly-paid staff are current students.
- 50% of permanent staff are University of Portsmouth graduates.
- 95% of volunteers are current students or alumni.
Together, this creates a vibrant, inclusive workforce that truly reflects and supports our university community.
Reward and Recognition
People are at the heart of everything we do in Sport and Recreation, and our successes are made possible by the dedication and contributions of our teams. Recognising and celebrating these achievements in a fair, inclusive and transparent way helps create an environment where everyone feels valued, supported and motivated to do their best work. Recognition is not just about rewarding success, it’s about reinforcing the attitudes, actions and values that support a culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence.
Our approach is guided by the University’s Recognition Ecosystem. This framework promotes values-led behaviour and brings together a range of schemes to celebrate contributions at all levels, reflecting who we are as a community: Ambitious, Responsible and Open.
