The 7-year wait is over as Ravelin Park sees the return of a staff favourite.
After a 7-year wait, Staff Sports Day returns to Ravelin Park this summer. The trophy has been dusted off and given a polish. We're now looking for staff teams to get the band back together.
Staff Sports Day will be held on Friday 20 June between 12.00-4.30pm. Staff are encouraged to compete or support colleagues and get involved in the day however they can. As long as the minimum business needs of the department are met, and based on the approval of your line manager UEB members are encouraging as many staff as possible to be involved in the day, either taking part or spectating and supporting your colleagues.
We are also organising a social event as part of Staff Sports Day, where food and drink will be served. We would love as many colleagues as possible to attend, even as spectators. Join in, network and socialise with colleagues after Staff Sports Day. Please join us, and encourage your colleagues to do so and let's make a day of it!
What is Staff Sports Day?
Think old-school Sports Day races, Egg and Spoon, Three Legged, Sack Race, Bean Bags and much more. Teams of 8-12 will take on fellow colleagues from across the university. We’re looking for 20 teams to join us in Ravelin Park, so if you have a massive department, enter more than one team. If there are more applications for teams than places available, we will aim to ensure there is a fair mix of departments and services represented.
Staff Sports Day isn't about winning, it's about getting out in the sun (if there is sun!), connecting with colleagues, being physically active and mainly having fun. While many favourites will be returning, we're introducing some new activities for 2025.
We want everyone to have the opportunity to participate and ensure that our Sports Day is inclusive. We'll have a number of activities that everyone can participate in, with the chance to win individual prizes.

Staff Sports Day is all about connecting staff, having fun and bringing us together - outside of the office. Want to see who’s quicker with a bean bag on their head, or debate with your desk neighbour about who would win an egg and spoon race? Staff Sports Day is your opportunity.
To enter a team, you'll need to have your team members' details and your line manager's approval. When you do, please complete the registration form. Each team member must have seen the Group Physical Readiness Questionnaire. Once you have the details ready, complete the form and get your team in. Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed team, so get creative, find your style and get your outfits sorted.
As a team captain, you’ll be responsible for your team. We will be communicating to you about the specifics, but your team members will hear from us as well.
Helping out on the day
If you would like to be involved on the day, but don’t want to take part, we’d love to have you involved in the day. We’re looking for marshals and activity leads to help out on the day. You will be fully briefed beforehand and provided with all you need. If you would like to be involved, please email sport-events@port.ac.uk.
Staff Social Event
We know that socialising and sport go together, so we are providing food and drink on the day, continuing after the formal sports events finish. We’ll tell you more about this over the coming weeks.
