Adult swimming lessons
It’s never too late to learn to swim, and as well as being a life skill, it can also help you with staying fit and healthy. At Ravelin Sports Centre, we are launching our adult swimming lessons in 2022. The aim of our Learn to Swim programme is to provide high quality swimming lessons for the Portsmouth community.
Whether you are looking to build your confidence in the water, or if you’ve never swum before, our instructors can help you with reaching your goals.
Who can sign up for adult swimming lessons?
Our adult swimming lessons are open to anyone over the age of 16. Our swimming instructors can tailor the lessons to individual needs, so if you are a complete beginner, or just looking to improve your technique, we can help at Ravelin Sports Centre.
The options available
- 10-week course - When it comes to booking your swimming lessons, you will pay monthly on a Direct Debit.
- Be Water Confident - For beginners who are not confident in water
- Be A Swimmer - Beginners/Improvers developing the basics of arms, legs and breathing on all four stroke types
- Be A Better Swimmer - Improvers will be swimming full lengths (25 meters), improving stamina and techniques
- Be A Master Swimmer - Advanced will be swimming full lengths (25 meters) continuously, will be introduced to interval training and improving fitness
- Be an Advanced Master Swimmer - Advanced 60 minute lesson for adults who can swim continuously and want to improve speed, endurance and technique. The lessons include Starts and Turns and all four competitive strokes.
- 1:1 lessons - We also offer 1:1 swimming lessons subject to availability, which are geared to the individual's needs. These lessons can be booked by emailing [email protected].

Frequently asked questions
Photography and videoing of swimming lessons within Ravelin Sports Centre is strictly prohibited.
To ensure safety and to keep belongings secure, nothing should be taken poolside.
Swimmers should wear appropriate swimwear for their lessons. Ideally men should wear trunks and women a one-piece swim costume. Long hair should be tied back and no jewellery should be worn during lessons.
Swimmers must change in the group rooms and not in other areas of the sports centre, including poolside or café areas.
Lockers are provided for swimmers’ belongings. Items such as Clothes, bags. should not be left unattended in the changing rooms.
If you have a relevant booking, you will be able to use the sauna and steam room either before or after your swimming lessons. However, you do not automatically get access to these areas with swimming lessons.
