Standing Up for Men’s Health

Movember is back, and we are proud to support this vital cause for the 11th year! As the leading global charity for men’s health, Movember shines a spotlight on some of the biggest challenges men face today: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

Since 2003, Movember has funded over 1,250 health projects worldwide, challenging outdated perceptions and transforming the way health services support men. Every moustache grown, every kilometre moved, and every pound donated contributes to a life-saving movement that encourages men to speak up, get checked, and stay connected.

This November, Ravelin Sports Centre invites everyone - students, staff, and the wider community - to join us and be part of something bigger. Together, we can create change that truly matters.

A Look Back

The University of Portsmouth community has shown year after year how powerful collective action can be. Since joining the Movember movement, we have raised an incredible £97,200.01 for men’s health initiatives.

  • 2024: £16,871

  • 2023: £16,056.58
  • 2022: £14,835.81
  • 2021: £12,238.00
  • 2020: £25,485.00
  • 2019: £7,657.00
  • 2018: £2,977.93
  • 2017: (not recorded)
  • 2016: £936.86
  • 2015: £502.83

Total raised so far: £97,200.01

Each contribution, whether a small donation or a major fundraiser, has supported research, early detection, and mental health programs that save lives. So let’s keep it strong in 2025!

Why Movember Matters

Men’s health issues are often under-discussed, and too many men face challenges alone. Movember works to change this reality by creating safe spaces for conversation and funding crucial research.

Mental Health & Suicide Prevention:

In the UK, men die on average 3.5 years younger than women, with suicide remaining the leading cause of death for men aged 20-34. Movember supports projects that break down stigma and encourage men to seek help early.

Prostate Cancer:

One man dies from prostate cancer every 45 minutes in the UK. Early detection saves lives, and Movember funds groundbreaking research to improve diagnosis and treatment options.

Testicular Cancer:

Affecting mainly younger men, testicular cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Movember drives awareness campaigns and provides resources for those affected.

This movement isn’t just about research, it’s about changing culture, promoting openness, and ensuring men everywhere feel supported.

Male Student Health

A 2020 study by the National Union of Students found that male students are significantly less likely to seek help for mental health issues than their female peers. This lack of support-seeking behaviour can lead to substance abuse, academic struggles, and even suicide.

Movember’s 2024 report adds to the concern: men in the UK are more likely to smoke, drink, and have higher cholesterol and blood pressure than women. They’re also more likely to be overweight, experience substance abuse, or die from self-harm and violence.

These statistics highlight a serious issue, not just for men, but for their friends, partners, and families. Movember aims to change these patterns through community, conversation, and care
