2 min read

One of the best things about the start of your university experience is Freshers’ week. It allows you to have fun, meet new people and settle into your new home. If you are not already familiar with freshers’ week, you can guarantee that after arriving here, you will hear about it frequently. It is the perfect icebreaker, allowing you to meet like-minded people who are in the exact same situation as you. Although the freshers’ period is an extremely exciting time, the fear of missing out on any of the events can cause you to exhaust yourself and become extremely run down. It is vitally important to ensure that you are well rested to minimise your chances of becoming fatigued or ill.

Freshers’ week is the perfect opportunity to get involved in a whole host of activities. You will also be given the chance to find out more about the university and your course more specifically. The Sports Fayre will allow you to find out about things like our Ravelin Sports Centre, all membership options, the sports clubs available, societies you can join, and about student deals that organisations in the local area offer.

As well as this, freshers’ week is renowned for offering a whole host of social events. Many nightclubs and bars in the local area offer ticketed freshers’ events. Give Me Sport allows all students to take part in any of the sports clubs available at the University of Portsmouth. There is a lot to do, making it the perfect time to have fun, make friends and try something new.

Have you heard of Freshers’ flu? It is somewhat unavoidable for many students, due to the extremely high volume of people mixing. This combined with lack of sleep, alcohol consumption and poor diet can only make you feel even worse. It is important to make sure that as well as trying to have as much fun as possible, you are still looking after yourself amongst all of the events and activities you are attending and taking part in.

Getting enough sleep is key to ensuring that you are able to enjoy freshers’ week to its fullest. It can be so easy to get caught up in everything that is going on and forget to factor in time to really look after yourself. The average adult needs somewhere between 6-8 hours of sleep each night in order to function optimally. Although this may not be possible every night, it is important to make sure that you give your body time to recover.

Freshers’ week is known for being a time for partying. However, especially for those who are consuming alcohol, it is important to remember to stay hydrated. Dehydration can cause fatigue and all kinds of health issues. In order to allow yourself to keep going throughout the whole week it is recommended that you drink at least 6 to 8 clubs of fluid per day, as a minimum.

It is important to always keep in mind during this busy period that health should always be a priority. You should try to make sure that you do not overwhelm yourself by feeling like you need to involve yourself in all of the things we offer. Make sure that you get enough rest so that you are able to enjoy your introduction to university life to the fullest.

We hope that the tips we have provided will help you to have the most enjoyable freshers’ week possible.
