Team UOP turn to volunteering over lockdown
As we entered lockdown in November 2020, students from sports clubs managed by Sport and Recreation and The Union, collectively known as Team UoP, focussed their time on raising and giving. As all sport and activities were put on hold during lockdown, students were keen to use their time to give back to the community and organised a number of projects under the 'Team UoP Together at Home' campaign.
Team UoP's Executive Committee, an elected group of student volunteers who work together as a team to be the student voice of sport, worked with local charities and co-ordinated a number of initiatives:
40 students headed to the seafront in Portsmouth to partake in a Beach Clean, where an incredible 16 large bin bags of rubbish were collected. We had people attend from 10 Team UoP clubs; Cricket, Women's Rugby, Lacrosse, Netball, Softball, Gym and Tramp, Cheerleading, Golf, Swimming and Sailing. All the individuals that signed up were put into pairs or with members of their household to conform to Government guidelines. This was the first Team UoP at Home initiative that we delivered and we were delighted to receive so many compliments from members of the general public who were thankful for the hard work of the students and the positive effect we were having on the community. Consequently, Team UoP have now adopted a stretch of Eastney Beach South under the Marine Conservation Society, and will continue to undertake beach cleans when Government guidance allows.
Crisp Packet Survival Blankets
A total of 1100 crisp packets were collected from across 14 sports clubs; Softball, Netball, Women's Football, Volleyball, Fencing, Athletics, Ultimate Frisbee, Cricket, Cheerleading, Basketball, Rounders, Sailing, Pole Dance and Women's Rugby. The crisp packets were donated to Iron Man Survival Blankets to be repurposed into blankets which are then donated to the homeless throughout the winter months.
Samaritans Operation Christmas Child
As part of the shoebox appeal for children around the world, a total of 36 shoeboxes were donated by a number of individual students and from Team UoP sports clubs; Dance, Sailing, Netball, Womens Rugby, Tennis, Softball, Womens Football, Scuba Diving, Volleyball. The boxes were filled with toys, hygiene items and educational school supplies which are sent to children affected by war, poverty and natural disaster.
Portsmouth Trussell Trust Food Bank
Working in partnership and adhering to Government guidelines, Team UoP had over 70 students volunteering at Portsmouth Trussell Trust Food Bank throughout the last lockdown. Volunteers worked to co-ordinate food donations and package the donations ready to be given to local families. Volunteers came from Team UoP clubs; Softball, Sailing, Cheerleading, Netball, Hockey, Dance, Womens Football, Squash, Pole Dance and Cricket.
Reverse Advent Calendar
As food banks in the local community are helping more families than ever in the local community, Team UoP worked in partnership with UoP Global to donate food and personal hygiene items to Portsmouth Trussell Trust Food Bank. These items were donated to the local community across the Christmas break from individual students, Team UoP Softball, Netball, Dance, Lacrosse, Sailing and Sport & Recreation staff.
